How to Schedule Posts to X in 2026 (Native, Buffer, Sent2X CLI)

A 1 September 2026 re-check still leaves three ways to queue a post on X: the native desktop scheduler (free, one post at a time, up to 18 months), a third-party queue such as Buffer or Sent2X, or an API / CLI loop where an agent runs sent2x create --at. The July version of this page cited a Buffer study of “52 million posts from 200,000 accounts.” That figure is not in Buffer's public reports. The timing study that is published is Kirsti Lang, 13 March 2026: 8.7 million tweets, Tuesday 9 a.m. local first.

What are the three methods for scheduling posts on X?

How do you use X's native scheduler (step by step)?

X's built-in scheduler is the zero-cost starting point. Sprout Social (2026) and Buffer (2026) describe the same desktop-only flow. The iOS and Android apps do not expose the calendar icon.

Open x.com in a desktop browser and click Post in the left sidebar (or the compose box).
Write the post. Free accounts stay at 280 characters. Premium can publish up to 25,000, but Buffer's 2026 guide says the native scheduler still caps a queued post at 280.
Click the calendar icon in the composer icon row.
Pick a date and time. X uses your account timezone. The window is 18 months. Polls cannot be scheduled — Buffer's exception.
Click Confirm, then Schedule. The Post button changes label after you confirm the time.

To edit or delete: open the composer, click Drafts, then the Scheduled tab (Buffer, 2026). Select the post, edit the copy, or delete it.

How do you schedule X posts in bulk with a third-party tool?

Third-party schedulers solve the one-at-a-time problem. Two queues that still publish to X, checked 1 September 2026:

Connect the X account — OAuth in Buffer or Sent2X. You do not paste an X API key into either product for the dashboard path.
Set slots — lock Tuesday 9 a.m. local as the default (Buffer, Kirsti Lang, 13 March 2026). Add Wednesday 9–10 a.m. if you post more than once a day.
Draft the batch— Buffer's composer, or Sent2X's planner. Buffer Free holds 10 posts per channel at once; a slot reopens after publish. Sent2X Free is 10 posts a month.
Review the queue — reorder, edit, or delete before the slot fires.
Let it publish — the tool calls X when the time hits. You do not need to be online.

Buffer Essentials at $6 / $5 per channel is still the cheap multi-network queue. Sent2X is X-only: Discovery, Signal, the x.com reply box, and a CLI. X moved API writes to pay-per-use in February 2026. Official rates on docs.x.com — restated by Bundle.social on 17 August 2026 — are $0.015 per Post: Create and $0.200 when the body contains a URL. Reads are capped at 3 million posts per monthly billing cycle. You do not need that credit balance if a scheduler posts for you.

Buffer shipped a GraphQL Public API plus @bufferapp/cli in May 2026. Typefully's v2 REST API (help article dated 5 May 2026) is HTTP-only. Use the study that exists, not a blended average. Buffer, Kirsti Lang, 13 March 2026 analyzed 8.7 million tweets in local time:

Best single slot: Tuesday 9 a.m.
Runners-up: Wednesday 10 a.m., then Wednesday 9 a.m.
Best days: Wednesday, Tuesday, Thursday.
Worst days: Saturday, then Friday.

Metricool's 2026 Social Media Study (1,123,528 X posts / 15,116 accounts) is a cadence and engagement source, not a clock: weekly posts 17.34, impressions 2,711.39, engagement 1.58 (up from 1.32 in 2024). None of those papers publish a 60% impression drop for “random timing” or a 0.05% platform engagement rate — those figures are removed.

Text-only math. URL posts on the X API multiply by 13.3× ($0.200 vs $0.015). Buffer Essentials yearly is $5 per channel; the table uses the $6 monthly card so the paid comparison is apples-to-apples.

Native X wins on price and loses on bulk. Direct API wins on cents and loses on the queue you have to write. There is no published 3–5-posts-per-day optimum. Metricool’s 2026 Social Media Study (1,123,528 X posts from 15,116 accounts) observed 17.34 posts a week in 2025 — about 2.5 a day — up 8% from 15.97 in 2024. Buffer’s 13 March 2026 checklist says post daily, or more than once a day if you have the bandwidth. Start near 17 a week and add volume only if per-post interactions hold. Can AI agents schedule X posts automatically?

They can queue your own original posts. Anthropic’s Claude Code docs describe an agent that runs shell commands.
